Finding Joy In Today

Joy For Today……Hope For Tomorrow

What Are You Saying

Today I am joining with the #FiveMinuteFriday group of writers to write for five minutes on a one word prompt. This week’s word prompt is: Say.

The first thing that came to mind when I heard this week’s word prompt is Proverbs 18:21: ”Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” What are we saying about ourselves, our family, or our situations? Are we speaking life, or are we speaking words of defeat? Are we building ourselves and our family up with words of praise and encouragement, or are we using words that can tear down and destroy.

We need to learn to speak life-giving words. How do we do this? By getting into the Word of God and meditating on scripture to help us consistently renew our mind. The Bible says in Matthew 12:34-40

How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

If your heart is full of anxiety and negative thoughts, it will eventually spew out in the words you say or speak. I always know when I am getting into a negative mindset because my words become negative. It is hard for me to think or say anything positive. At this juncture, I need to quickly renew my heart and my mind by prayer and Bible reading. Meditating on the Word of God will always bring our thoughts back into proper alignment.

We need to remember how our words and thought life are closely interwoven. Learn to be patient with yourself and with others. Be slow to speak and quick to listen (James 1:19). Make sure the words you say are edifying and uplifting and begin to speak life to yourself, your situations, and those around you.

    1. It’s hard to not be negative about ourselves but God thinks we are beautiful and perfect.

  3. This is a great post, and it’s so true. What we fill our minds with will impact what comes out in our words and our actions. It’s so important to be rooted in God’s Word. Visiting from FMF #13.

  7. They say that it is quite all right
    to admit cancer’s depression,
that I really needn’t always fight,
    and denying truth’s repression,
    and that balance truly calls
for crying out in depthless sorrow,
for in the end the hardest falls
when he has no strength to borrow.
Well, fine and dandy for y’all,
    beneath Crybaby Tree,
but I don’t fit there, I’m too tall,
and since there isn’t room for me
that the balanced life I understand
means a beer in either hand.

I’m not really this flippant. I’m a whole lot worse.
